Stereoview card (3D) - 7" x 3.5" (Holmes format)
Heavy atmosphere and low light can cause an image lose definition if one is not careful. A slower shutter and non contrasting model might have pushed this image past the point of repair in a 2D world but this subtle beauty has two things that are calculated to transform it to a crowd favorite. Notice the leading lines of the path's edge. That is the only color to survive the overpowering tint of the day. With such a still scene the model must show motion but artistic blur can be the enemy of stereo capture. A tricky foreground treatment was the final ingredient to put this over the top. The oddly cut bottom corners actually cause a three dimensional hinge where the path hinges and jumps right off the card. The general reaction by the public usually involves some colorful language.
Card can be viewed in a traditional stereoscope, as well as with a modern viewer such as the Loreo Lite. Every care and consideration has been given in producing these cards. Shortcuts are common and can be difficult to detect, but it's clear that these works have been taken to the next level.
Experts may debate over the fine points of card production but four out of five of us agree... These Cards Rock! It takes an artist, a craftsman and a stubborn scientist to develop work like this and I'm pleased to create a legacy one image at a time.
